A message from Jeff, February 2022

Dear Ingraham Athletics Family,

For the past 3 years I've had the honor of my 18 year career to serve as your athletic trainer. 

When I came here I strived to show all of you two things....

1. How much I cared about all of you

2. That every athlete in every sport matters, whether  you are on the football team or the bowling team, you are all equal and should be treated as such.

Based on the incredible amount of cards I received I believe I did that.

For some of you I was your second maybe even third athletic trainer in your high school career. For some of you I'm the only athletic trainer you've known.

Regardless I hope I showed you the value of an athletic trainer, and to never expect anything less than the professionalism, passion, dedication and caring that I showed YOU DESERVE THAT!

I've worked at 7 high schools in 18 years and this was by far the best experience I've ever had even through COVID. I've made so many friends and formed relationships that I will cherish forever.

Thank you to the parents for putting your trust in me with your student athletes. Thank you to the coaches for the incredible work you do and never once questioning me, thank you to the athletes for making my job easy and reigniting my passion for this profession. 

Thank you to the boosters for working with me and making my job easier by ordering things I asked for.

Lastly thank you to Traci.

Traci has become one of my best friends, a mentor a sounding board and a colleague. More than that she is family!

Huff I love you I'm so blessed to have met you and worked with you.

I promise i will come visit!

Important information about heat illness and sport

To the parents of Ingraham athletes, to our coaches and athletes themselves.

I want to talk about an extremely important topic and that is heat illness/dehydration. 

There was a story in the Washington Post about Imani Bell, a 16 year old high female high school basketball player. It was a 97 degree day in the month of August in  Georgia. Imani ran up and down a hill, did a bout of jumping jacks, circled a football field, and then jogged up a set of stadium stairs with her basketball team. 

Imani had nearly reached the top of the steps when she leaned into a handrail and fell limp. She had suffered a heart attack. Nearly two years after her death the basketball coaches who oversaw the practice session have been charged with murder, cruelty to children and involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. 

This could have been prevented had the coaches who observed Imani experiencing signs of heat illness during the outdoor practice not directed Imani to continue performing conditioning drills with the team. 

On Tuesday an Omaha High School Football player collapsed and died of heat stroke. 

Unfortunately these incidences are becoming more prevalent. The sad thing is they are easily prevented. 

And that is what I want to talk about is what we can do to prepare for the upcoming season. 

I have posted several bits of information. This information is related to heat illness. As we start fall sports next week Washington will be expecting temperatures in the mid to upper 80's. 

These are not temperatures our kids are used to participating in. 

If we are not prepared and do our part to ensure the safety of our athletes then heat related illnesses can become very dangerous very quickly. 

Let me summarize what I posted.

1. I posted a link to a short YouTube video called "Heat Illness in Athletes" I STRONGLY encourage you to watch it, it's 3:52 seconds long. It provides good information on what heat illness is, how it affects athletes, what the signs and symptoms are and how it is treated. 

2. I posted the WIAA Heat Index Policy. This is something we must follow as coaches and myself as the designated medical authority for Ingraham.

It states that ....

  • Maximum of 5 hours of practice per day in divided sessions.
  • Provide unlimited amounts of water.
  • Water should always be available and athletes should be able to take in as much water as they desire.
  • Watch/monitor athletes for necessary action

Coaches we MUST abide by this.

I will have a cold water immersion tub accessible at practices in case rapid cooling is necessary. 

3. I have posted an infographic called "Athletes Guide to Hydration." 

Parents you play a critical role in this. I highly encourage you to help your student athlete to ensure they are properly hydrating before , during and after activity. This infographic is a good reference. 

Due to still being under COVID protocols, we are allowed to provide water refill stations but we CANNOT provide water bottles as we cannot have athletes sharing water bottles. 

PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE make sure your athlete brings a water bottle to practice. This gets more difficult as they return to school. But it is especially critical going into next week.

Ingraham is an NATA Designated Safe School, we are 1 of only 16 high schools to receive this designation. We have emergency action plans in place, and I assure you safety is our number one priority here at Ingraham.

To our Ingraham athletes and parents of athletes:

If there is an injury that is sustained during a school team’s practice or game and it's not an emergency, it should be reported to Ingraham's Athletic Trainer, Jeff Wilson, or their respective coach before going to see the doctor.

Our trainer would never advise a parent or Athlete not to go to the doctor, but if they go to the doctor before seeing our Athletic Trainer, according to WIAA rules, he cannot clear them to return to play without a clearance note from the medical provider.

See Jeff first. Then go to doctor. OR
If you go to doctor before seeing Jeff, but make sure you have the note from doctor with clear remarks that they are cleared to play. The doctor note must be provided to Jeff, the trainer, before they return to play.
